Error 1722 when rebooting after automatic Windows update

Hello,

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro sp4. When I booted up an automatic Windows
Update ran and then prompted for a reboot. After I rebooted I was missing a
bunch of Desktop Icons, which I was unable to locate the path too. I also
was not able to access the internet or print and couldn't locate the drivers
(In both cases I knew the path to the shortcut & the drivers, they just
weren't there.) When I tried to open any office XP Professional applications
I received the following error:

Error 1722. There is a problem with this windows installer package. A
program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your
support personnel or package vender.

Any ideas on this one?

Thanks,

Wes

Note: Log in as an administrator or as a user with administrative rights.

To register Wintrust.dll

1.. Click Start, and then click Run.

2.. Type the following and press Enter:

Regsvr32 wintrust.dll

3.. Click OK at the next prompt.

Wes, I just had the same problem, and I'm having a hard time coming up with a
solution. Did you ever find out how to fix this? Did it work? Please help!

Open control panel "Add or Remove Software". Scroll down to M for Microsoft
Office XP. Select Microsoft Office XP, then click button "Change", then
select "Repair Office XP"

I am trying to install Earthlink software & I ge the "Error 1722. There was a
problem with this Window Installer Package". Before this popped up I got
"Digital Signataure Not Found....go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com....search
for Microsoft digitally signed software.....Exception Package...."

Can anyone help me with this?

I wish I would have tried your fix (much simpler), but didn't see it until
too late.
I called Microsoft (apparently support is free if problem is caused by
security updates) and they had me temporarily remove the latest fixes
(KB917537, KB917159, and KB914388 which apparently didn't install correctly).
After that, they had me create a new administrator login and profile and
abandon my old one (which is apparently corrupt).

After all that everything appeared to be working. I got all my icons back,
and I was able to get into Office, except for not being able to access my
old stuff in Outlook. I went into Outlook and imported my *pst file from my
"old" administrator folder, and voila' everything was visible again.

I'm not sure that this was the best way to fix this, but I was just happy to
get my stuff back
