Is Automatic Updates enabled (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525)?
How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602 1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527 2. You cannot install some updates or programs http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 3a. Check your WindowsUpdate.log (%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log) for errors associated with the download/install or inability to reach/use Windows Update website. How to read the WindowsUpdate.log file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 3b. Thank you for links and tips.
However, I didn't find any solution. I searched windows update LOG file and found these errors / warnings: - 796 e54 EEHndlr WARNING: Failed to populate ServiceStartup entries in Cache: error 0x80070002 - 796 e54 DtaStor WARNING: Attempted to add URL http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...08/11/*****etc... - 796 e54 EEHndlr WARNING: Failed to populate ServiceStartup entries in Cache: error 0x80070002 I tried to fix this "error 0x80070002" following this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910336 and reinstalling the WU client but the problem persists. Now when I started update and passed even the screen where it asks me if I want "express install" or custom choose which updates - and after couple of seconds of progress bar - the message just says this: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." In WindowsUpdate.log is still - 796 2970 EEHndlr WARNING: Failed to populate ServiceStartup entries in Cache: error 0x80070002 Do you have any other solutions please? |

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you. Assuming you're replying to my post: You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page" error message when you try to install an update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883614 0x80070002 Windows Update error http://www.updatexp.com/0x80070002.html See http://groups.google.com/group/micro...40a576520d4f04 However, given that this appears to be a sudden, new problem, there's a very strong possibility that the problem is due to a hijackware infection. 1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx 2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be): http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm 3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum. Checking for/Help with Hijackware http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878 http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_R...:_Introduction http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/prevention.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2 (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0, http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review by an expert in such matters, not here.** If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop. ===================== Reposting: Start a free Windows Update support incident request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 Support for Windows Update: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. Sorry for not including previous posts.
I checked everything you suggested and none of the solutions worked. Here is what I did: 1. tried http://www.updatexp.com/0x80070002.html I even renamed all SoftwareDistribution folders (Windows folder, system32 and SysWOW64) 2. tried re-registering DLLs http://groups.google.com/group/micro...40a576520d4f04 and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/943144 3. I didn't tried this because I have everything present and working in Services Control Manager http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883614 4. Checked for viruses, rootkits and spyware and I'm clean If it's helpful - when Windows updates comes to the point (after checking for latest updates) to choose "EXPRESS" or "CUSTOM" - when clicked on EXPRESS the "install updates" is grey-out (not the left one in menu pane, but the button on the right) - I cannot click it; while clicking on the CUSTOM gives me the message "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." PS: All signs point to a hijackware infection as the cause of your problems. Good luck. I have posted my hijackthis.LOGs on AumHa and SpwareHammer Forums and experts
didn't find any proof of malware infection so far. See here: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...p?topic=1267.0 and http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=37288 So far I tried scanning with NOD32 v3, Trojan Remover, Supera Antispyware, SpywareBlaster, AdAware 2008 and Malwarebyte's Anti Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy, F-Secure BlackLight 2.2, and latest MS Malicious Software Removal Tool 2.5 (windows-kb890830-v2.5.exe) - and was completely clean. Is there something else you can advise me to do regarding my problem? "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > > 4.
