Error 643 after attempting Windows Update

I recently was installing the regular Windows Updates which were
automatically downloaded from the MS website. I got a message that one update
failed to install properly and the information given was "error code 643". I
clicked the "try again" button and got the same result. When I searched
online help for information about "error 643" I got a large list of error
codes but none of the first few pages included "error 643" in the text. As
usual, there was no additional information so I am left with the choice of
posting this question or simply ignoring the update. I have no clue as to
what the update involves or what I might be missing because it failed to
install properly.

Which version of Windows, please ?
Updates are either automatically downloaded from MS' servers or one
initiates a visit to the Windows Update web site where updates are
accepted, then downloaded, and installed to the Operating System.

Which was it ... automatic downloads or a visit to the WU site ?

Either way, there will be an entry showing the update in the
WindowsUpdate.log
Please go to Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste the below into the
Open: line]

I have had the same problem, I run Windows Vista on my laptop, mine is setup
to do automatic updates.

I, too, have received this same error code for the same situation. I have
Windows XP and am set up for automatic updates. When the PC tried to update
it, I got a "failed" message so went to Microsoft Updates site and tried to
manually update it. I got the same error code. Here are the last 50 or so
lines from the procedure you suggested: Any help would sure be appreciated!

This issue can occur if the previous .NET Framework component is damaged. Let's try to
remove the previous version of .NET Framework and reinstall all of them.

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility
============================================
1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Save the file to your Desktop
3. Please double click the file msicuu2.exe on the Desktop to install this
tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1
========================
1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.
2. See if you can find .NET Framework software. If so, remove it.
3. Restart the computer and see if the issue still exists.

follow up question to my previous post..
-- I looked on updates in add/remove programs..here is what I have listed:
Microsoft.Net Framework 3.0(Hotfix for Microsoft.Net Framework KB932471.
This one was successful on 8-1-2007.

The update that failed from windows update site was Microsoft. Net Framework
ver1.1 SP1 KB929729 (Code 643)


My question is should I have not attempted to download the KB929729? I'm
confused.

Suggest you use the steps on this page to remove .NET Framework 1.1:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...10/502439.aspx

Then download a fresh copy of it from the link on the above page and
SAVE it.
Then download the update from here and SAVE it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

After the downloads have been completed close the browser and any other
open programs.
DISCONNECT the system from the internet if it's on broadband.

*** Completely disable the installed antivirus software either by
reading the product's Help file or by consulting it's web site. ***
