Error 800401E4 on attempt to download any WU

Hi, yesterday WU started giving me an error when trying to download updates
so hopefully someone knows of this issue.

Nothing has been changed on my machine but suddenly I get error code
800401E4 when trying to download updates.

Updates are detected fine, I can't find a reference to this error code in
relation to WU plus nothing seems amiss (to my eyes) in windowsupdate.log:

As usual the code is almost meaningless without its context.

Did you try to find some which contains your error code?
Where are you seeing it otherwise?

Try doing a search of all files which changed on the day of the update
which contain 800401E4, sort them by Date Modified, then scroll
to the minutes of the update. Try to find some context details for the code
in any diagnostic files which that search turns up.

I have tried MS Support with no real progress to date.

I have the 800401e4 error code when trying to install updates.

MS got me to try renaming the windows\softwaredistribution\ directory and
windows\system32\catroot2\ . This seemed to force WindowsUpdate to take a
while checking for available updates but I still get the same error.

Looking at my WindowsUpdate log shows an error:
