Running Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit, have been unable to get this update to
install. Tried both using Windows Update and downloading standalone. Have
disabled McAfee antivirus, msconfig selective startup, etc., with no luck.
Any suggestions?

You receive a "0x80070020 The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process" error message when you try to download an
update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update

Thanks, I had already found that article and tried all of the methods. 1)
Reboot, 2) Safe mode with network, 3) clean boot, 4) disable spyware and AV,
5) disabled firewall.

I have downloaded the file Windows6.0-KB955519-x64.msu, saved it on my local
drive, and tried running it with all of the above methods and still get the
error.

Here is what seems to be the relevant sections of WindowsUpdate.log and
Logs\CBS\CBS.log, which don't seem to say anything more than reporting the
80070020 error. Is there another logfile somewhere that would have more
detail (like, which file can't be accessed or which process has it opened)?

When did you install Vista SP1? Did you install it manually or via Windows
Update?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed Vista SP1?

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge through 18 Mar-09

Vista SP1 was preinstalled by the manufacturer, HP TouchSmart IQ506.

McAfee Antivirus, free from Comcast, set to receive updates automatically.
Have tried running with antivirus disabled from McAfee Security Center, as
well as msconfig selective startup. (In safe mode with network support, the
installer refuses to run.)

The only anti-spyware is McAfee and Defender, and have tried turning them
off as above.

No third party firewall, and turned Windows Firewall off.

If Vista SP1 came preinstall on the machine, you don't qualify for the free
SP1 support from MS, so scratch that.

Speaking of preinstalled software, what (if any) anti-virus or security
suite free-trial software (e.g., Norton; another McAfee application) came
preinstalled on the machine when you bought it? Did you uninstall it before
you installed the McAfee Security Center-freebie from Comcast?

Norton Internet Security came pre-installed. I uninstalled it when it
expired and installed the McAfee. I have also run the Symantec removal tool
again since then.

Thanks,
Ray

Open up the Task Manager and find out what else is running that could
possibly be interferring with Windows Update and locking up the files etc.

It's going to be a slow process of elimination.

Are you running any programs such as Spybot?

McAfee Security Suite includes the McAfee Firewall: If you disable it and
then enable the Windows Firewall, does the problem persist?

Is the HP machine still under warranty or Service Contract?

I have turned off everything in McAfee Security Center. I have also tried
the "selective startup" with all non-Microsoft services disabled. And I also
tried uninstalling McAfee.

The HP was purchased in July . Are you suggesting contacting HP support?

Thanks,
Ray
