The error translates to: "Cannot complete this function."
Please try the following (Print out these instructions, as you will be
rebooting):
1. Close all programs other than your newsgroup reader. Again, you'll be
rebooting.
2. Click Start
3. Click Run
4. type: services.msc
5. type the <Enter> key, or click OK.
6. When the Services windows opens, check that the following services are
started, and set to Automatic:
a. Automatic Updates
b. Background Intelligent Transfer Service
c. Event Log
7. Close the Services window.
8. Click Start
9. Click Run
10. type: cmd
11. type the <Enter> key, or click OK.
12. When the command window opens, type: net stop wuauserv <Enter>
13. Automatic Updates service should stop.
14. Reboot the machine.
15. When the machine returns from reboot, repeat steps 8-12, changing the
command in the command window by typing: net start wuauserv <Enter>
16. Verify that the Automatic Updates service started, or is already
started.
17. Launch an Internet Explorer browser and try to reach:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
18. If step 17 succeeds, scan for updates.
19. If step 18 results in updates, select an update, and click Install.

You can find this:
A. Right-Click on My Computer
B. Click on Properties
C. Look at the Operating System listed on the General tab for the words:
"Service Pack"
