Hi,
I have error 80070424 since a week, so unable to update. I installed SP2 on
July 10 and I have the impression that the problem has started then, although
I'm not absolutely sure (had updating on manual and didn't check for 1-2
weeks). Received 2 updates for defender though, so that still seems to work
somehow.

Since then I tried:
- several ways to restart the windows update service (using regsvr32.exe
wuaueng.dll etc, as described f.i. in this forum
- checked the status of the several services that seem to be involved: all
OK as it seems
- ran the Fix it 5020 tool, agressive mode, twice
- ran the malicious software removal tool, july 2009, full scan: no
infections found

Problem is: I noticed too late I had a problem, as the rest of the PC is
working fine, so I lost the restore point from before installing SP2

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jan

Has KB955430 been installed yet?

Jan,

Please check this registry subkey {Start orb > Run > type in regedit >
click OK or press Enter > agree to the prompt to allow the registry
editor to run):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

Under 'Name' in the right hand pane IF there is a *DeleteFlag* value
listed, *right* click on it and select Delete.

DO NOT DELETE any other Name or Data PLEASE.

To PA Bear: Downloaded KB955430 and got the reply that my system did not need
this update, so I assume it was already installed. This update was from april
I understand, updating was still working back then, so if it was in the
normal udpating sequence I must have installed it back then.

To MowGreen:
Checked this registry subkey, but found nothing as indicated.

Exported the subkey data: maybe you find something abnormal in the following?:

My Vista Ultimate 32 bit shows some differences in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv
subkey, Jan.
Suggest you first export the key, just in case <w>
I'll list what you've posted first and then what's on my system:

Value 1
Name: DisplayName
Type: REG_SZ
Data: Windows Update

Value 1
Name: DisplayName
Type: REG_SZ
Data: @%systemroot%\system32\wuaueng.dll,105
================================================== ===============================================
Value 3
Name: Description
Type: REG_SZ
Data: Enables the detection, download, and installation of
updates for Windows and other programs. If this service is disabled,
users of
this computer will not be able to use Windows Update or its automatic
updating feature, and programs will not be able to use the Windows
Update Agent (WUA) API.

Value 3
Name: Description
Type: REG_SZ
Data: @%systemroot%\system32\wuaueng.dll,106
================================================== =============================================
Value 11
Name: RequiredPrivileges
Type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Data: SeAuditPrivilege
SeCreateGlobalPrivilege
SeCreatePageFilePrivilege
SeTcbPrivilege
SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege
SeImpersonatePrivilege
SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege

Value 11
Name: RequiredPrivileges
Type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Data: SeAuditPrivilege
SeCreateGlobalPrivilege
SeCreatePageFilePrivilege
SeTcbPrivilege
SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege
SeImpersonatePrivilege
SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege
SeSutdownPrivilege

All of the other keys show the same Value but, there is no
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv\Enum
key, perhaps due to the OS being 32 bit vs. 64 ?

When you registered wuaueng.dll you received a success message, correct?
I suspect that the Data for DisplayName and Description may need to be
set to wuaueng.dll with the path added rather than the Data that is
showing on your system.
Backup the key and then see if changing the Data for those Names has an
effect, Jan.

MowGreen, PA Bear....no luck...

OK, entered the data as Mowgreen suggested into the wuaueserv key, restarted
the system: update showed another error code: 800705..(forgot the last 2
digits).

Anyway: checked out services and noticed that the WindowsUpdate was not
started after startup.

So: restarted the service using regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll and indeed;
Windowsupdate appeared back into the Services menu, but was not running.
Started it manually, status indicating Started, tried Windows Update
again....same errorcode: 80070424.

Could try to copy that other key of yours though of your 32 bits system?
(although I have the strong feeling we're messing around here in the
registry, haha)

Can you enable & start Automatic Updates, reboot, and then find it still
enabled & Started?

Is Windows Update set to Automatic (Delayed Start) or Automatic ?
BITS is set to Manual, correct ?

That may have been the "clue" error code, Jan ... or not.

Registering wuaueng.dll *reLISTED* the Service in Service console ?
And then you had to Start the service, correct ?

Hmmmm ... I'm not sure if this issue is related to the application of
SP2, security software, or "unwanted guests".

Since we are not 100% certain that WU was functioning properly prior to
the application of SP2 (manual updating was done) but we do know that
Defender was updating automatically ( which is usually a good indication
that WU is functioning properly ) ... when SP2 was applied was the
antivirus/security suite *actively* monitoring the system, Jan ?

PA Bear: yes, I put Update on Automatic update, rebooted, but still the same
error code.
Tried the other options as well in the Windows Update menu (and then
reboot), but with no success.

Mowgreen: BITS and Windows Update were both on Auto(delayed start) in
services; I changed Bits to manual, but with no success: still the same
80070424 after reboot
