Hello,

I have a problem with my Windows Update (error 80072ee2) - it is not working
(I have a Windows Vista Ultimate and a DSL connection), as well as all
Microsoft web-sites, all secure pages (https). I have already tried
everything that is written at Windows Help web-site
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us), but nothing helps. The
problem is not in Internet Explorer settings or Firewall, because when I use
a Wi-Fi hotspot everything works fine with same settings and Firewall, but
when I use my DSL connection I always have the same problem. Lots is written
on the Internet about this problem but everything is of no use in my
situation.

If anybody had something similar, please, help.
Thanks.

If you've already look at the obvious, let's try another approach -

Posted by =Mac=

<snip of relevant part> I was getting the 0x80072EE2 message on a machine this evening. I
never had a problem with it.

I tried all of your suggestions to no avail. However, in a post from several months ago,
someone mentioned an MTU seating on a router. I had upgraded the firmware on my home
router several days ago and left the MTU set at the default of 1500. Come to think of it,
my Internet connection seemed a little sluggish since I upgraded the firmware.

I reset the MTU to 1492, and voila! Windows Update works again.

I write this post so that someone else doesn't overlook a simple solution to a very
frustrating problem.

Router / Firewall / Wireless Router MTU ==> 1492 or less <snip>

Result posted by "tinman"
<snip> The problem is with the AOL connection. Basically you need to amend the MTU
settings of the WAN down to 1400. You can experiment and see if it works going up to 1460
but it doesn't work past that. <snip>

But how can I change MTU in Windows Vista?

For XP there is a DrTCP software. I tried it (although it is for XP), but
there was no result at all.

Thanks

Do you have a manual that came with the router?

THANKS !

I was getting this error after a vista update afew days ago, preventing me from a) logging in to messenger, b) using windows update, c) accessing ANY microsoft web-site (useful ones anyway, including logging into windows live and using webmail).

Saw this article, logged in to my router, changed WAN MTU to 1492 and BANG ! Everything works. I'd really love an explanation as to why I could browse to anything but Microsoft !

That's right. You *are* an error and hijacking a 2 year old post also makes
you a moron.
