Hi. I hope someone can help.

I have a new desktop computer with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have
successfully installed updates recently. But the last group of 13 updates
have failed, and I got the error 80246005.

I'm reasonably techie but not an IT professional. Please respond in end-user
English.

Thanks for any help!

Hi:

Try this two ways and let us know how it work. If the first one works, do
not follow the next one:

"
Enabled HTTP 1.1 and HTTP 1.1 through Proxy Conections in Internet Explorer.

1. Click Tools / Internet Options
2. Click Advanced Tab
3. Scroll down to HTTP 1.1 Settings
4. Check both the checkboxes to enable both settings

"

Second try, the long time:

"
Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc then press enter.

Now look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to
stop Click Start, select
Run, type in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution then press enter

Open the DataStorage folder and delete its contents. Click Start, select
Run, type in: type services.msc
then press enter Now look again for the Automatic Update Service and choose
to
start Try running the Updates again.

If in doubt, cut and paste the contents of the datastorage folder to another
location so that you can copy them back if required.
"

Hi Juan,

Thanks, but I'm afraid your instructions did not help. Both HTTP 1.1
settings were already checked. I deleted the contents of the DataStorage
folder but could not run the Automatic Update Service as you described. I
tried to run it using the icon in my Start menu but got an Update Manager
error #-5.

Any additional thoughts most welcome.

Hi Juan,
Partly my mistake--Your instructions said "stop Click Start" right next to
each other; I saw only the "Start" (for the Update Service). When I did it
again the right way--stopping the service first--it worked! I had to download
everything again and I lost my history, but the updates installed OK.

Thanks,
Janet
