I received a notice that I had a Security Update for Windows XP (KB899589).
This update fails to load with each installation and give me an error code of 0X8007F06B. I have Windows XP SP3 and IE7. Appreciate any assistance. |

I have the same problem on my machine.
I have gone through the recommended procedures to find a solution, but it is evident that the error code 0x8007F06B does not exist. So no solution is found. Search engine asks if I have spelled it correctly and yes I have. I hope that MS can fix this soon, because it is becoming extremely annoying seeing this request for update. I also received the same 0x8007f06b error from Windows Update. I also downloaded the kb899589 & it failed stating my Service Pack does not need it. I also don't have any Netware Client running so I don't know why Microsoft considered it to be a Critical Update at all. This appears to be a bug in the Windows Update detection logic. KB899589
should not be needed if WinXP SP3 was installed properly. 1. Stop the Automatic Updates service: Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK] Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop (Stopping the service will take a moment) 2. Delete the contents of the Download folder: Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK] Open the Download folder and delete its contents Close the window. 3. Go to Windows Update website > Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to complete > Uncheck/deselect KB899589 and hide it ("Don't show me this update again"). 4. I'm curious about your comment: "KB899589 should not be needed if WinXP SP3 was installed properly." Never had any problems with the download of SP3 on this machine. It performance has been fine, and there have been no unusual occurances since this error appeared. Is it possible for SP3 to be uninstalled and then reinstalled? For example can I uninstall it through add-remove programs and then reinstall it? And if so, where would I be able to find the download file for SP3? Appreciate your assistance. Well, I wonder if the Microsoft folks tweaked their system?
I just went through the steps to hide KB899589, and then I rebooted my computer. Afterwards, I did a new update check and KB899589 is no longer listed....AND...I am not getting the notification that I have "hidden a critical update". Hopefully this is good news.
