Error in Automatic Updates

I am getting this message about 100 times an hour. "Automatic Updates has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." Even after shutting down Automatic Updates. The error
message says wuauclt.exe is to blame. Even renamed the file to see what would
happen. It reinstalled itself. My virus software says I'm clean but this
thing seems to act more like a virus than a useful program.
