I don't know for sure if this is the same problem you are having, but it
sounds similar to one I just had. Also, to solve my problem, I messed around
with my registry (using 'regedit'). Changing registries can mess a computer
up, so don't change anything other than ones mentioned here unless you are
sure of the changes. For the registries changed here, I make no guaranties
that the solution for my problem will work smoothly for yours (use at your
own risk, so to speak).
I can't remember exactly the way this happened, but at one point I came
across the error message '0x57A' trying to install Security Update KB914796
for Office XP. I believe this error occurred when I was using the Windows
Update website to install. I decided to download the actual file onto my
desktop from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
and installed it from my desktop. This time I got a different error: Error
1402 and something about not having permissions to registry:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Class\giffile\shell\op en\ddeexec
I used Start->Run...->'regedit' and found the registry, right clicked on it
to select 'permissions...' and allowed 'full control' for my username and
administrators. This didn't work. So I contacted Microsoft, and they
suggested using the Office detect/repair function (may require Office XP CD):
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. If Control Panel is not in
Classic View, click Switch to Classic View.
2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. In the Currently installed programs list, click to select Microsoft
Office XP product. Click Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, select "Reinstall or Repair",
and then click Next.
5. Click to select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation" and
the click "Install" button.
This didn't work either as I again received Error 1402 when it was trying
to create registries, but this time it said no permissions for just
'\Software\Classes\giffle'. I assumed it meant:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Class\giffile
So I tried using regedit again to give 'full control' to my username but
again it didn't work. I finally decided to rename 'giffile' registry to
'giffilex', so that Repair/Detect could write a new 'giffile' registry, while
I would still have the old 'giffile' (now 'giffilex') in case something went
wrong. When I ran the Office XP repair/detect again, it worked. I checked
regedit and, indeed, there was a new 'giffile' registry, while the old
'giffilex' was still there (in case I needed it, so far I haven't).
Now, once all of that was done, I was finally able to successfully run the
KB914796 update and all of my Office XP programs still work fine as far as I
can tell.
Hopefully that helps!
