I'm having the same prblem as Jesper.

On July 24th 2008:
Tried to update "Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)" from
http://www.update.microsoft.com/ but it gives an install error of 0x643.
The question is how do I fix it.

De-install any "helper" programs (searchers for UNCFAT (think this was the
main one), .MSG files or favorites). Failure was because it could not
deinstall older version due to above. I disinstalled all manually, and
download 4.0 from the MS site. All installed well then....

I figured out how to install Windows Search 4.0 on my computer.

You have to have terminal services enabled in order to install.
Start>run>type "msconfig" & press enter>click services tab>make sure terminal
services box is checked, if it isn't check it>apply>restart>install. You can
download Windows Search 4.0 here

Same problem here . . . KB940157, Windows Search for Desktop, is ONLY WinXP
update that i can't install successfully. Everything I've tried - even with
MS-Support - has failed. Numerous things, from Safe Mode to disabling all
Services has been tried . . . nothing works.

My "nerd-gut" tells me this problem might somehow be linked to WinXP
Desktop's insistence upon loading ALL of my picture files - literally
thousands of pictures - simply because I ONCE loaded a personal picture as
Wallpaper . . . and once used My Picture Show as a Screen Saver.

Yes, yes, I've tried returning my Desktop back to plain ole WinXP Bliss with
no screen saver. The Search Install still fails.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks.

I love User Forums.

Chaos5207 gave us all the answer right here . . . if I could read . . . duh.

TERMINAL SERVICES HAVE TO BE ENABLED.

Heck, the install failure error message KEPT TELLING ME THAT EXACT THING! I
just didn't know what it meant . . . until I looked here, in the User Forum.
Sometimes I marvel at my own stupidity . . . I'm really amazing.

For some reason my TERMINAL SERVICES were disabled. I returned them to
AUTOMATIC (in Administrative Tools is the easiest place). And the Windows
Search 4.0 for Desktop installed perfectly.

Thanks Chaos5207!

Did I mention that I love User Forums? d:-})

Find and read other threads about that code?
Otherwise start your own thread about *your* symptoms
and don't confuse others' threads by piggybacking onto them. ; }

since it was released.
Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)

Error Code: 0x643
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.

No luck, but is probably a mute point now with 7 on the fly.

then it is bye bye XP
