Error Code: 0x8001011A - fro mWindows update

Up to 13 July 2005 windows update worked fine.
Today (29 July) I keep on getting

Windows XP family Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
Error Code: 0x8001011A


File WindowsUpdate.log includes these lines (date/time of 2005-07-29

The only reference I have found to code 0x8001011A is "No security packages
are installed on this machine or the user is not logged on or there are no
compatible security packages between the client and server." from
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;186063
and this did not give me any help!

I think this is a related issue with the BITS (Background Intelligence
Transfer Services),

Please, in the command prompt (start /run/cmd), type this command lines
(hitting ENTER after each line)

regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll


also verify the state of the service, start / run /control
panel/administrative tool /service, click Services, and then click
BITS. Ensure the service is set to manual and the status is started, go
to windows update again.

Fermu,, thank you for the suggestions. Status of BITS was as required, ran
the regsvr32 commands and they reported success. Bits still had the required
status. Windows update still failed with the same error code.

A friend recommended doing a "chkdsk /f" and rebooting. Chkdsk found and
fixed one issue with unlinked free blocks. Later I tried Windows update and
it worked OK.


Lines in WindowsUpdate.log change from:

So it worked but I do not know why it failed or what really changed to make
it work.
