When I try to update I get the Error Code on the install process of Windows
Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). The system has been updating
with out problems with the last Successful status of February 16, 2006. I
have restarted the system.

David: I had the same error message and spent hours trying to follow
numerous convoluted instructions on how to correct "my" problem before I
finally got a quick & easy fix thanks to Sally Tang. I am pasting her
instructions below. Hope this works as well for you as it did for me:

Dear Donna,
Thank you for your update. I am sorry to hear that the problem persists and
appreciate your time and effort on this issue. According to other customers'
feedback, this issue is related by the WGADiag2.exe tool. I also suggest
using the WGA diagnostic tool to check the issue

1. Please open Internet Explorer and visit the following link to download
the WGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
2. Save the WGADiag2.exe file to Desktop, and then double click on the file
to run the tool.
After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and see if the issue
is resolved.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Sally

Thanks Lucky Lady your recommendations worked. Maybe Microsoft will place
this on a knowledgebase site in the near future.

Again thanks

I have the same problem with this update. I did everything Lucky Lady said to
do,
but I still have the problem.

I found a site that I went to that fixed it.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/h...s/default.mspx
I just did what it said and it fixed it.

Another vote of thanks to Lucky Lady. After hours of trying to find a
solution, running WGADiag2 sorted everything out for me.

Much appreciated Lucky Lady, the knowledgebase can become very tedious when
you can't find the answer!

I can't remember exactly how I did it, but I ended up having to do an online
validation of my Windows authenticity. Once completed, then my updates came
with ease. The link below is where I began the linking journey to find the
solution. Once I completed the online validation, I went back to Windows
Update. No problem after that.

Sally you are a genius
Great thanks for this solution. You wouldn't believe how much time (abut a
week) I spent fixing 6 XP boxes that refused to take automatic WSUS updates
from our internal WSUS server. It all started with failed/stalled download of
XP SP3 on those 6 computers. After 2 days I fixed 3 of them using many MS KB
articles and fixing the errors pointed in windowsupdate.log file. However for
some reason those magic 3 XPSP2 boxes didn't want to update no matter what I
was doing - I tried almost everything but the system reinstallation. On the
end it came up that I cannot install SP3 on those 3 boxes even manually
through WindowsUpdate.com nor from the command line using downlaodable
package... so I started looking for error explanation again all over... then
I found finally this page and here voilla!

You got the solution that jumps out on me like a small devil from the box

I have to admit that running WGA diag tool seemed naive to me in the light
of problems I experienced and in the scope of research I performed. But here
I stand corrected and bow my head before you Lucky Lady
You saved my day!

I don't know what the WGA diag tool does (thought it only reads some
registry keys), but since then the computer downloaded fresh Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool and taking automatic updates got unlcoked again
After that SP3 allowed me to install itself like a charm

Let the Force B with U!
