Using Windows XP Home SP3. Windows Updates KB953404 and KB954478 WILL NOT
INSTALL, even after trying the troubleshooting steps outlined in
Knowledgebase Article 903774. (NOTE: When I look at the status for the
Office Source Engine, IT IS ALREADY SET TO MANUAL. Even if I change the
status FROM manual TO disabled AND BACK TO manual again...and click
apply...THE OSE SOLUTION DOESN'T WORK. Obviously something must be wrong
with either the Knowledgebase instructions OR the Office Update itself.)

I am having the same issues. My Office Source Engine is also set to Manual.
I also shut down all my firewall/virus software, and still did not work. I
will try a manual install next.

How to do a "manual install" of a Windows Update? I can't find KB953404 and
KB954478 on Microsoft.com to download or install them manually... I searched
for KB953404 and KB954478 on my computer and found nothing...

Insert your Office 2003 CD into the appropriate drive bay.

Thank you; however, I have no Office 2003 CD. My Dell Dimension 4700 came
pre-installed with Works Suite 2004, which included Works 7.0, Word 2002, and
Works Clipart. (Word 2003 was a "free upgrade" from Word 2002, because Works
7.0 was installed). So, I have five Works Suite 2004 installation discs only.

Is there another way to do a "manual update?"

Downloaded both updates successfully to desktop--HOWEVER--got "The update
cannot be applied" when I tried to install either one. Thank you for trying,
Ottmar. Any other suggestions, please? Increasing frustration. :-(

Thank you Freudi--HOWEVER--I am not going to try this solution AT THIS TIME
because, I have successfully used Windows Update to make security updates to
these programs in the past. Nothing on my computer has changed since that
time; therefore, it seems logical no alteration in any installation path
should require changing. (I still suspect something is amiss in the updates
themselves...since another user is encountering similar difficulty in
applying the updates.)

Dan, my manual installs failed; I assume yours failed as well? I'm having no
luck at all with these two updates. Similar "security updates" on these
programs have worked in the past, using Windows Update. However, not all
updates have gone "perfectly"--that is--I have encountered similar
difficulties using Windows Update before. In the past, as I recall, the
solution seemed to be "revised updates".
