In October I auto sucessfully updated Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
KB890830. Then in November it tried to do it again and failed with a error
code of 0X800706BE. Do I have a problem? I also noticed a folder( folder name
is 24668c9c514933523a54cdfd3d) in my C drive that is not in my desk top
computer C drive. Inside the folder was two files, mrtstub.exe and mrt.exe.p.
I sent the folder to the recycle bin, look in again and nothing is in the
folder now. I restored the folder and still nothing in it. It was created the
same day the update failed, could that have created it? and do I still nee
the folder for anything? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Short answer: Leave everything as it is now and download/run the MSRT
manually via http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx.

Then post back and tell us if that folder on C: is still there.

Idownloaded it four times and everytime it appeared to download OK but when
Ielected RUN it would start and lock up with 4 bars displayed on the progress
line. I also looed at the update history and it does not indicate the manual
load was attempted. Any ideas?

I did what you asked , it appeared to download OK but when I selected RUN it
would start and lock up with 4 bars displayed on the progress bar. I tried
this 4 times with the same results. Also I looked in the update history and
it has no indication that the last 4 loads ever happened. Folder is still
there on the C drive. Any ideas?

1. Try running it (a) offline and (b) with your anti-virus application
temporarily disabled.

2. Checking for Hijackware which may be causing the problem:

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
