My new crystal ball sez - 0x800706BE - RPC_S_CALL_FAILED
The remote procedure call failed.
Checkpoints (Windows XP):

Make sure the services mentioned below are not disabled on startup:

Go to Start > Run > type in : service.msc
Click OK or press Enter

Automatic Updates /Automatic

Background Intelligent Transfer Service / Manual or Automatic

Remote Procedural Call (RPC) / Automatic
Also click on the Log On tab and ensure that there is a Profile listed under
Hardware Profile and that it is Enabled.

First read: Preparing for installation
http://winhlp.com/node/125#Preparing_for_installation
and
Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

Also suggest you download the full SP3 package and *save* it after
reading the above prior to another installation attempt:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

The logs for the installation of Service Packs are located at:

WINDOWS\Svcpack.log
WINDOWS\setupapi.log

Suggest you go over them to see where the installation is failing.
setupapi.log is the first one you should check.
