Updates will not install. I am told that they are downloading but then they
don't install. Everything was fine until about a week ago but I don't know
what I have done to alter any settings.

least 80 updates as my machine had a massive rebuild last week everything

Hi;

Your error code translates as "Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system
with a free (retail) version, or vice versa." Yeah, that doesn't make a
lot of sense to me either. <g>

Something to try: on the Start/Run line enter "services.msc" and when that
opens check that the "Automatic Update Service" (that will be named "Windows
Update" on Vista systems) is Started and is set to Automatic. If not set to
Automatic, then change that. Also check that the "Background Intelligent
Transfer Service" is set to Automatic --- again, if not then change it.

Next, STOP the Automatic Update Service. Delete the entire
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder (you will lose your update History,
but that is no big deal). Also delete (or move if you see something you
want to keep) the contents of your Temp and Tmp folders. Normally those
will be located in the "C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local
Settings" folder on XP and "C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local" folder on
Vista.

Last, close the Services list; open Control Panel and select the Internet
Options applet. On the General tab select the option to Delete under
Browsing History; delete your Temporary Internet Files section (on XP be
sure to check the box for deleting Offline Content).

Now Reboot your computer {this will guarantee that everything is Started and
with a clean slate} and before doing anything else go to Microsoft Update;
watch for any prompts to install MS controls and agree to them. Then (on
XP) do a Custom Scan; on Vista just Check for Updates. Unselect all the
items offered, then pick just one to install. Proceed with the download and
install. If all goes well then you can repeat the scan and select all that
apply.

BTW, I highly recommend that you UNselect and Hide any .NET updates and
instead manually download those and install them manually outside the MU/AU
venue. Fewer problems that way.

Just some guesses, but hope this helps.
