Hi,

I'm getting the exact same problem that a lot of other people are getting
here: Windows Update via the web fails with error 0x800A0046, and the
Auto-Update icon merely disappears when you click on it. However, nothing I
have read here has fixed the problem.

None of Microsoft's suggested fixes work because a) because it's a domain
controller there are no local users to modify, and b) the 'sc' command
doesn't exist.

I have tried removing the domain 'Administrator' user from the Guests group,
with no effect.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is not a good situation.

You can download SC.exe from here:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/reskit/win2000/

1)
Are you logged in with that 'Administrator' account when trying to
install the updates? (and if you were logged in with this account when
you removed it from the Guests group, you will need to log off and on
again for the change to take effect).

2)
Are you logged in from the console on the computer, or are you using
some remote control software to log in?

I have a win2k DC having the same problem. I have checked the user account I
log in with and it isn't a member of the guest account. I am logged directly
into the server, not through terminal services. I have tried all the
solutions I could find and nothing has worked. The 'sc' command ran
successfully but still no luck. I have also rebooted multiple times with no
success. Is there anything else I can try?

I am having the exact same problem on our Win2k Domain Controllers. I also
have tried all the solutions and could find and nothing has worked. The 'sc'
command ran successfully but still no luck.
