Hi;
Doing the following should help (all pre-Vista systems):
Close all open applications/programs.
On the Start/Run line enter "net stop wuauserv" (without the quotes) and
press Enter
Open the Windows folder, and delete the entire SoftwareDistribution folder.
Don't worry, it will be recreated when you next go online; the only thing
you really lose is your Update History, and that isn't a big deal.
Next, on the Start/Run line enter "net start wuauserv" and press Enter.
Open IE, and go to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...6/default.aspx
Watch for the yellow bar asking you to install ActiveX controls. Say yes to
any of those you see, and follow the instructions. If needed, follow the
instructions to change from Windows Update to Microsoft Update. Once the MU
screen is loaded and no other downloads are being offered, do a Custom scan
on your system.
Hopefully the above will clear the error condition you have been seeing.
