I am unable to install updates at the MS Update site. It will always give me
a failed message, though sometimes the critical only updates will install
once I turn off the computer. Never the optional updates. I am getting the
error code 80240020. I looked up this code on the MS website. It told me to
get into the registry and follow to the following
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn, which I did. The problem I am
having is that I do not have a Notify\SensLogn. This subkey is under
....Notify_Disabled\Senslogn. There all the registry entries are present and
correct - just in the wrong spot. I am an administrator (the only person) on
this computer. Any suggestions?

There is no Notify_Disabled registry key. Either someone has modified your
entry or your system has been hit by a virus/malware.

I would export the Notify_Disabledkey and then delete it.
Then create a .reg file containing:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn]
"DLLName"="WlNotify.dll"
"Lock"="SensLockEvent"
"Logon"="SensLogonEvent"
"Logoff"="SensLogoffEvent"
"Safe"=dword:00000001
"MaxWait"=dword:00000258
"StartScreenSaver"="SensStartScreenSaverEvent"
"StopScreenSaver"="SensStopScreenSaverEvent"
"Startup"="SensStartupEvent"
"Shutdown"="SensShutdownEvent"
"StartShell"="SensStartShellEvent"
"PostShell"="SensPostShellEvent"
"Disconnect"="SensDisconnectEvent"
"Reconnect"="SensReconnectEvent"
"Unlock"="SensUnlockEvent"
"Impersonate"=dword:00000001
"Asynchronous"=dword:00000001

Then save this and double-click on the filename. It will place the key in
the registry. This is from a Windows XP SP2 system.

You should have a SensLogn in the Notify key and you should not have a
Notify_disable at all.
The Notify key is necessary for starting up Windows XP.

Export the Notify_disable registry key (right-click and select Export), then
delete Notify_disable key (right-click on key name and select Delete).

You can then click on the .reg file you created from my previous post OR
copy the Export file you just created to a new filename.reg. Then Edit the
new filename.reg and replace all Notify_disable to Notify.
Save the file and then double-click on it. It will then add the Senslogn
data into the Notify key.
