Error Code: 0xD0000005

Hello. I ended up here after my XP2 installation failed. It got all the way
up to Performing Cleanup. The system stopped moving for about 40 minutes and
then told me I had an error and gave me a box that dropped me here. Where do
I go from here?

Hi. Yes, I was installing sp2. I gave up at that point and when I woke up
this morning, I right clicked my computer and it said I had the service pack
2, where as
the other night, it showed sp1. So I guess even thought I got that error, it
somehow still got installed. Prior to installing, I backed up my computer,
searched for Malware (none thank goodness), cleaned cookies, tmp files and
defragged and installed new RAM. I think I pretty much did everything I was
supposed to do and in doing a lot of research on the above error, I guess it
might have something to do with a registry or something. Everything seems to
be working pretty well. I checked for updates to install and it said I had 56
and all the ones pertaining to office software (which I don't think I even
have on my computer) failed, but the rest said "done!". I have also installed
and updated IE7 along with the security updates. I guess my only question now
is, even thought the full part of Performing Cleanup, didn't finish am I
still being protected completely? Is there a way for me to check to make sure
my computer is totally protected??

Was the installed antivirus software actively monitoring the system
during the installation of SP2 and then later, IE7 ?
That is a well known cause of installation failures, overly long
installation/cleanup operations, and 'odd behavior' in terms of how IE7
functions.

As to the Office updates failing to install ... there are files
associated with Office in the OS. So, go here, under Updates in the left
frame click on ' Office Updates '.
Do the ' Genuine Dance' and allow the required ActiveX controls to
install, then check to see which updates are offered. Suggest that you
install any large updates first. Try to keep the amount of updates to
install limited to 3 at a time.
There will be a button to check for more updates so you will not have to
revisit that page.

Also, highly recommend a defragging of the HD after SP2 is installed.

ha, Ok, I thought I was losing my mind ! Thanks for the link. I ran it and it
found no other updates that I need. My only concern now is those updates that
failed pertaining to the microsoft office. I would think if they failed, they
would have been in this list as needed, right?

Sorry, before when I said "is there a way to find out if my computer is
totally protected", I didn't see that you actually asked another question.

I guess what I was referring to was, is there a way to check to see that SP2
was installed correctly, all the updates have been installed and downloaded
and my computer is protected as far as what this SP2 was supposed to provide
(hackers, holes in the programs, etc).

Yes, the Office Update site would detect any needed updates for anything
related to Office.
To find out if SP2 is installed go to Start > Run > type in

winver
Click OK or press Enter
Under 'Microsoft Windows' you should see
Service Pack 2 next to the Build number

To confirm that no further updates are needed, initiate a manual visit
to Windows Update via either the shortcut on the Start Menu or by
opening Internet Explorer and then click Tools, Windows Update.

To confirm and view which updates were installed *successfully*, go back
to Start > Run > and then copy&paste this into the Open: line

%windir%\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.log

Click OK or press Enter
Scroll all the way down towards the end of the log
Work your way back up the log and note which updates were installed
successfully
You can also see which updates were installed by opening Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel
Make sure the 'Show updates' box towards the top is checked
Then scroll down towards the bottom to the "Windows XP-Software Updates"
heading. Most, *not all*, of the updates will be listed there.

And finally, there is a tool offered up by MS that is

Thank you. Ok, I did everything you suggested below. I do have SP 2
installed. I opened that log and went all the way to the end and up, but to
be honest, I had no idea what the heck I was looking at. I think they were
all installed, but I can't be sure...Then I went to that MBSA website and
downloaded that tool, but nothing happened and I couldn't find it anywhere on
my computer after it downloaded and installed. Am I now supposed to do
something with it or will it alert me if I have some kind of a problem?

After installing MBSA there *should* be a shortcut icon on the Desktop
that looks like a Lock with a Green check mark on it. It's name is
" Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1 "
It should also be listed on the Start Menu > All Programs as
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1
Finally, it should be listed in Add/Remove Programs as
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1

MBSA needs to be run by you in order to update it and then to scan the
system. It will not run by itself after installing it:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0 is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895660

When you locate Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1, double click
it to Open it.
In the left frame, under See Also, click the Microsoft Baseline Security
