error code 80070057 when trying to update.

Ok, I have just installed a fresh copy of vista. I went to start installing
the updates and it tried to dl the new update module. After about 3 mins, it
quit, gave me the above error code, and then I got a msg saying the module
installer quit working. Help please!!! This is the third try at this for me
with a fresh install.

This error (0x80070057) indicates that the Windows HTTP proxy settings are
invalid.

To resolve this problem, remove the HTTP proxy settings. To do this, follow
these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. Type Proxycfg.exe, and then press ENTER.
The current proxy settings are displayed.
3. Type Proxycfg –d, and then press ENTER to remove the proxy settings.
Check BITS is started
4. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
5. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
6. In the General tab, click Start.

Did you format the HDD prior to installing this "fresh copy of vista?"

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
