hello-
when I am trying to install updates that are "important" I get the error
code 800700666 with the message "Windows Update encountered an unknown error"
and the status is Failed. I then opened my Update log and, much to my
surprise, about 96 out of the last 100 automatic updated failed. I have
MCAfee full protection plan, and nearest I can tell was not infected. I just
speng $2500 on this Dell XPS M1530 with Vista and cannot get this problem
corrected. The error log listed all the fails from the update date of
1/25/09 (2 weeks after I bought this) and I cant even do a system restore as
of that date as the restore dates only go as far back as 2/19. Somebody
please help me.

Please double-check that error number.

Did the McAfee application come preinstalled on the computer when you bought
it?

See if the Vista-specific Resolutions in this KB article help at all (ignore
