I do not have a problem accessing the windows update site, and it tells me
what I need. But when I attempt to download/install it fails. This happens
on each system that has installed the XP SP2. All other systems work fine.

I am not using proxies and the only firewall in use is the Router (NetGear
WGT624).

I have read the KB articles, but none apply. I have entries in my HOSTS
file, but only to redirect to localserver for SQL Server in a development
environment.

This is what the Update History log shows:
***********************
Installation Failure

Error Code: 80072EFD
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.
***********************

Anyone got any clues?

Hi

Some trouble shooting step for error 0x80072EFD here (I would think
the most likely cause for your error is a Proxy/Firewall configuration
error):

When accessing the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x80072EFD error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=16&ln=en

You should also try the steps here:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=26&ln=en

You might need to use proxycfg.exe (see link above) to either set
or remove a proxy server configuration:

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).

If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

To get more help on proxycfg:

proxycfg -?

Thanks, but as I previously stated, I do *not* have a proxy on any system.
The only firewall is a hardware router firewall, the NetGear WGT624. There
are no restrictions on the firewall.

The problem started AFTER the XP SP2 upgrade.

I can access the windows update site just fine. It scans my system and lets
me know what upgrades I need. That all works fine. It's the DOWNLOAD that
Fails.

Same exact behavior on 2 different systems after SP2 installation.

It would be nice to get this resolved. I have 2 more systems that require
SP2. But I will not apply it until this gets resolved.

Hi

1)
Did proxycfg report "Direct access (no proxy server)."?

2)
Do you use any kind of Web accelerator software?

3)
Do you use any kind of always-on spyware protection software?

To answer you questions, no to all. However, I did finally get a response
from MS support and it actually fixed the problem.

Suggestion #2 did the trick for me. Not sure why though. Both systems get
turned off every night and restarted in the morning. When I viewed the
services, both services were already running and set to "Automatic". All I
did was start and start the 2 services. Went to windows update and all
worked as it should.

Here's the post:
***********************************
After doing some research, I have found few troubleshooting steps which will
resolve this issue. After completing each method, go to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and check if the issue is resolved and
please also inform me about the result of the same.

NOTE: If you are running Ad-aware or ZoneAlarm or PC-Cillin or Norton
Antivirus or Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall or
Proxomitron pop-up blocker or Ad Muncher or web accelerator e.g.
"Slipstream", I would recommend you to temporarily disable or shut down any
of these installed on your system and try accessing Windows Update site. Be
sure to enable them again when you complete the update process.

If you can access the Windows Update site with these applications disabled,
then you may need to add the Windows Update site to the applications
exception, or 'do not block' list. Please see the applications documentation
on how to do this.

Suggestion 1:
***************
This error occur if your Internet connection or configuration is preventing
access to the Windows Update site We will disable the proxy for your computer.

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options
3. Click the Connections tab.
4. Click LAN Settings
5. Clear the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.
6. Click OK.
7. Close Internet Explorer.

Close all windows and try accessing the windows update site. If the issue
stays, please try the next set of instructions in Suggestion 2.

Suggestion 2:
***************
Wael, this error can occur if one or more of the following services are
disabled or not running. We will therefore RESET Background Intelligent
Transfer Service and the Automatic Updates service.

1. Click Start --> select Run. In the Run box, type services.msc Click OK
2. Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Right-click on it and
select Properties
3. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list,
make sure that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK
4. Similarly find Automatic Updates service. Right-click on it and select
Properties
5. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list,
make sure that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK
6. Close the Services window

[Please note that if the service is already started the "Start" button will
be grayed out. In this case "Stop" the service and then "Start" it again. On
the other hand if the service is not running, the "Stop" button will be
grayed out. In this case "Start" the service]

Once we have reset the two services, please access the windows update site
and see if the issue is resolved. If the issue remains, please try the next
steps in Suggestion 3.

Suggestion 3
***********
This issue also occur due security settings in Internet Explorer. We will
change the security settings applied to your system. This can be done by the
performing the following steps.

Add Windows Update to the Trusted Sites Zone:
--------------------------------------------------
Add Windows Update to the list of Trusted Site Zones. Security settings in
Internet Explorer must be set to Medium or lower for ActiveX files to
correctly pass to your computer Only the Web sites listed in Internet
Explorer's Trusted Sites Zone will be affected by the lowering of Security
settings. Your current security settings for all other Web sites will remain
as they are currently configured.

1. From the main toolbar in Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click
Internet Options.
2. Click Security.
3. Click Trusted Sites Zone.
4. Click Sites.
5. Clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone
check box.
6. Use the Add button next to the Add this Web site to the zone box to add
the following sites:

http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

7. Click OK.

Now try accessing the Windows Update Site and check if our issue is resolved.

Here is how I was able to work around the problem.
Using command prompt
i.e go to your start/run, then type : cmd.exe
if you do not have a proxy go to step 2 straight away
1. proxycfg -d (to clear proxy cache)
2. net stop wuauserv (to stop Automatic updates service)

Using Windows Explorer
3. Delete all files and folders in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (your windows folder may vary)

Again using command prompt
4. net start wuauserv (to start Automatic updates service)

Try now going back to Windows Update web page.

This is just to say thanks! The solution under "Kamal" worked for me. Thank
you to everyone who contributes to these postings and helps solve problems
that are insoluble by any other (practical) means.
