Hello everyone,
I have a new Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium, service pack 1. After
renewing Mcafee Virus protection the Windows Updater no longer works. I have
tried turning off the firewall with Mcafee but still unable to update. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows

If McAffe is set to scan incoming/outgoing emails then it probably is
using a proxy setting to do so.
To see if it has, open an Elevated Command Prompt ( Click the Start orb,
enter cmd in the Start Search field; right click cmd.exe under Programs;
choose 'Run as administrator'; enter a password if one is used and/or
click the Continue button )
At the Elevated command prompt enter the below *exactly* as listed below
and then press Enter

netsh winhttp show proxy

IF McAfee is using a proxy for emails you will see it listed under the
following -

Current WinHTTP proxy settings:

IF it says " Direct access <no proxy server> then a proxy for scanning
incoming/outgoing emails is not set and the issue is strictly related to
McAfee's firewall. Even though you may think it's been disabled, it is
still affecting communication with the Microsoft update servers.
Consult McAfee's forums to learn how to *completely* disable the
firewall and then Enable the native Vista firewall.

*IF a proxy is listed*, you can either disable McAfee from scanning
incoming/outgoing emails or type in the following command and then press
Enter

netsh winhttp reset proxy
Then type in exit, press Enter, and the command window will close.
