this code appears after the updates installed on 21/07/ 2006....up to this
point vista had been performing with ZERO glitches from installation to set
up and onwards . vista beta 2 build 5384. stability rating has been flawless
until this happened.
i'm now being prompted to download updates and this message appears..any
suggestions anyone[sensible ones only please]

I'm getting the same error 80240018 - looking in the log it's an unrecognized
error. There's a few people around with this one but no solution. Anyone
have a solution to this one yet?

Here's a fix that works:

locate wuapp.exe in ..\system32 & right-click & choose run as admisitrator.
When Windows Update runs this time it's fine.

locate wuapp.exe in \system32 & right click then choose run as administrator
- this fixes your problem (did for me)

Thanks for that info, I will remember if it happens again. I had to do a
clean install to solve the problem prior to your posting. So far so good and
again I have a score 10 in the reliability monitor again..it's a bit like a
game isn't it but I suppose that's what beta testing is all about!!

as someone else mentioned, running Windows Update as "Run As Administrator"
cures the 80240018 Windows Update failure. Just locate ..\system32\wuapp.exe
& right click & choose Run As Administrator. Works fine for me after this.
Obviously missing some priveleges somewhere...

I have noticed that if you login quickly after booting up Vista this can
happen.

If you leave the login screen up for a couple of mins it always seems to
work ok, I don't know if this 100% true, but I have no real way of testing it
out
