or from task tray) it gives me the error code and has a link to "get help"
(now i'm here!) I've tried to get help from HP they had no clue, and i've
read FAQ's and all the other posts here, but i'm not finding anything that

Error message when you try to install updates by using the Windows
Update Web site: "0x80245003"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749

After deleting SoftwareDistribution, download the latest version of the
Windows Update Agent and SAVE it:

For Vista 32 bit:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

For Vista 64 bit:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

When the download is complete run WindowsUpdateAgent30-xXX.exe [the XX
stands for either the 32 or 64 bit version] -

Try the first link and see if that works.

If not, follow these directions step by step

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (it will be recreated next time you
visit WU again)
You will lose your history but that's not important.

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
Finally if you want to force a detection cycle in AU then close IE
Now click on Start and select Run
Type wuauclt.exe /detectnow in the Open box and click OK
Try the WU again

Note: You can delete the folder you renamed "AFTER" you complete windows
updates.

To resolve the issue, I recommend that you contact Microsoft support by
following the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=6527

There is no charge for support issues with Windows Update.
It would be great if you can post back to the newsgroup about how the issue
was resolved.

Both Windows defender and Windows update in Vista were not able to down load
updates and I was receiving the same error code - 80245003.

I followed the provided link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749
the only thing this did not say to do, but Vista users probably have found
out they have to, after running the command prompt I found out I did not have
permissions to run the provided commands. I had to go back to start,
recently run programs, right click on Command Prompt and run it as Administer.

I was then able to run the automatic windows update. It ran, downloaded and
installed the updates with out any more problems.

Having first tried to update windows defender, I received an error, but the
updates included in the windows automatic updates fixed defender.
