Error Code: 80246005 Comes and Goes

Hi Guys.
I had this error when initially trying to install WinXP SP2. I had just done
a clean install of WinXP, installed security patches and downloaded and
installed SP1. When I went to download SP2, I got the Error Code: 80246005. I
tried repeatedly without rebooting to download and no success. I was
downloading all the Windows XP updates manually using Windows Update (my
preferred method).

I then rebooted the machine but this time I tried using Automatic Updates
which I had set for Notify Me When an Update was Available. It worked no
problem. I then rebooted and download further updates, this time manually
using Windows Update (my preferred method) with no problems. I then decided
to download some Windows XP non-critical updates and then same problem -
Error Code: 80246005.

I rebooted and tried to manually download - same problems. Rebooted several
times and same problem. I then scanned on this site and discovered several
possible solutions. I then re-installed a printer driver and rebooted as I
had problems with my networked printer. I decided to try once more to
download the Windows XP non-critical updates before manually using Windows
Updates and it worked !?!?!?!?!?

I was going to try the stop/start services solution but now it is working,
should I ?
What is causing this problem ? As I am often away, I would prefer that
updates be a no brainer so that the machine is always protected.

Side-Note:
I am using Nortons Systemworks 2005 with only Norton Utilities and
Antivirus. But I have a laptop also configured similarly - although I am have
not installed Win XP SP2 due to issues with critical software I run on this
machine (Rockwell PLC Software) and I have never had this problem. Another
point to note that this machine has had previously successfully installed Win
XP SP2 without this error ever showing, although it was running Nortons
Systemwork 2004 and NOT 2005 at the time.

Hope someone can shed some light.

Thanks

Peter

Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc
then press enter
Now look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to stop

Click Start, select Run, type in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
then press enter
Open the DataStorage folder and delete its contents.

Click Start, select Run, type in: type services.msc
then press enter
Now look again for the Automatic Update Service and choose to start

Try running the Updates again.

If in doubt, cut and paste the contents of the datastorage folder to another
location so that you can copy them back if required.

No guarantees, but it’s worth a try.

Thanks Taurian.
Thanks for your reply.

However what are the consequences of doing this ? I was about to do it when
I managed to do the download - problems has happen twice now, and after
several reboots works. Since the last time, I have done 2 more manual
downloads using Windows Update without problems.

I have tried to find out what this actually does using a google search, but
cannot find out exactly what consequences ares. But it seems to me that I
would have to re-install ALL my updates again ? Is this right ? I have spent
5 hours downloading all the updates. I'd rather not go through it all again.

I managed to find a simple microsoft article, but it briefly outlined why
problem might occur, but not consequences of deleting the
SoftwareDistribution folder
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

Thanks

Probably lose what has downloaded and not installed. That's why you can copy
the files to another location and then copy them back if required.

Hi Taurarian.
Thanks for the reply.

I'll give it a shot next time it happens.

Thanks
