Error Code 80246008 when trying to update XP Pro

Finally managed to get Windows Update page to open, told it to download and
install everything I needed, then left it to get on with it.

Got home and ALL selections had failed with the following error code:

Installation Failure.
Error Code 80246008

This affected every selection I had made from the update site (40 items in
total).

Any ideas? I can't find that error code anywhere on the MS site.

Dave

Do not try to install more than 3 updates at a time. It will go much better

Error 0x80246008 during the download process - This error may occur if the
Background Intelligent Transfer Service is not enabled.
Note: Even if you are not using the Automatic Updates feature, the service
must be enabled for Windows Update.

Tried this fix (thanks) but when I try to start BITS from services.msc I
get the following error message:

Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local
Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Now this REALLY confuses me, since the file it seems to be looking for is

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

and I know svchost.exe is present on my system - As I write this, there are
7 incidents of this file running on my system (As revealed by Windows Task
Manager).

Could this fault be causing other problems I have noticed recently, such as
my Search (Start/Search) freezing up as soon as it starts looking for
anything?

I have also seen realsched.exe eating up 99% of my processor time recently -
And that's a lot of cycles on a 3 gig processor! I know this is also
connected with Windows Update.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Thanks for the response.

I run AVG anti-virus, with daily scans of my entire system, and also Spybot
Search And Destroy and Ad-Aware SE weekly. None of these find anything
untoward on my PC at all.

As a caveat to this, I WAS infected with the Dedier worm a while ago, but
this was cured by AVG on installation. Stinger reports no infections
either.

"Dave",

Did you get BITS to start running? If not, what error are you getting?
Please try to start it from a command line, so we can see the error in
there:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: cmd
4. Press <Enter> or click OK
5. When the command window opens, type: net start BITS <Enter> <--This
means press the <Enter> key, so please do not type it out.
6. If it fails to start, you will see an error and then an explanation line.
7. Please reply back to this newsgroup with the results.

Thanks,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I tried your commands and it said "BITS is not recognized ....."

Doing a "Search" for BITS yielded nothing.

I was finally able to get this to work by applying the fix published by
Marc Liron (MMVP) for error 0x8007043b in which I added BITS to the
"netsvcs" key.
