Error code 8E5E03FA Windows Update on Vista

When I'm trying to install the updates available for my computer it gets to
the part where it is installing, but stops at 1/5 of the process and gives me
the error code 8E5E03FA. I've searched around the net for it, but haven't had
any success.

Before I had this error I used to get a error regarding .cab files or
something like that, but that got fixed by deleting the
"SoftwareDistribution" folder in the Windows folder.

All the services required is running, Automatic Update is off (not the
service, the feature), etc.

PS: I do not want to use the "Repair Windows Installation" via the install
DVD, 'cause it usually screws with my already installed programs and registry
settings.

Ditto re the above. I'm getting the same error with updates and Microsoft no
help at all. Any assistance would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

I am quite impresed with myself as I have sorted this without a solution from
Microsoft.

The problem sits with the Catroot2 folder but in Vista you need to rename it
the old DOS way.

In Accessories go to Command prompt, and right click, run as Administrator.

net stop cryptsvc

press enter and wait for the service to stop.

type

cd\

press enter.

type

cd windows\system32

press enter

type

ren catroot2 catroot

reboot

Go to Microsoft download centre and manually download one problem update.
Install this. That puts a new Catroot2 folder onto the PC.

Window sUPdate now works properly for all other updates.
