error code c000021a

hi i recently formatted and installed xp home, with no additional 3rd party
software installed. immediately i have installed the critical updates. the
system runs well. then when i install service pack 2, the system crashes with
the error c000021a. this is just one example. ive installed from scratch
several times and have similiar crashes each time. ive flashed the bios on an
intel d850gb mainboard and still same problem, ive even downloaded a patch
from microsoft and installed that as well. can someone tell me the cause and
the solution to this problem so i can install service pack 2 please.
