Error Code Ox643 when installing Update KB953297 in Windows XP Hom

I have found the recommended solution at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 but am a bit reluctant to remove the
programs relating to .NET Framework. In my program listing I have 3
references to .NET Framework:
Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
Microsoft User.Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0
Do I delete all of these? The reason I ask is that in the fix
documentation I can only find reference to Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 when
it comes to reinstalling programs that have been deleted. It worries me
that I may be doing something I should not!
Grateful for any help.

Step #1 => Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework
versions which are already installed:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Step #2 => Now see Resolution Method 2 in...

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0,
or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows
Installer error code "1603" (ignore the title, if need be)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install all .NET Framework
versions manually using the download links on the page then run Windows
Update manually to install security updates for same.

NB: If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstalling it will also
install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2.

IMPORTANT! => If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstall your .NET
Framework versions in the following order:

1. .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, then...
2. .Net Framework 1.1, then...
3. .Net Framework 1.1 SP1

NB: KB923100 references this page:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...30/611355.aspx. Please read
ALL of it as well as the related page
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx before using the .NET
Framework Cleanup Tool.

Step #3 => Check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security
updates offered.

Thank you for the info PA Bear[MS MVP]. Unfortunately, the reference you
give to identify which versions of the .NET Framework are installed does not
cover any Hotfix issued and which is one of the items in my program listing
which Im not sure should be removed. Neither can I find reference to
another program listed in my original question - Microsoft User.Mode Driver
Framework Feature Pack 1.0 - is this to be removed from my program listing?
Any other thoughts?

Don't worry about any hotfixes. Removing the associated .NET Framework
version using the utility will remove them, too. After reinstalling the
..NET Framework versions, Windows Update will offer any needed hotfixes; this
time they should install properly.

That Driver Framework has nothing to do with .NET Framework and the utility
shouldn't touch it.

Sorry PA Bear, but I've run into trouble in determining the full details of
the .NET Framework which was installed. I was using version 1.1 but when I
checked the Mscorlib.dll file properties it came up with the full version
number of 1.1.4322.2407. That number does not coincide with any of the
version numbers listed at microsoft.com/kb318785 and so I do not know whether
I dealing with Service Pack 1 or earlier. Any thoughts?

v1.1.4322.2407 corresponds to .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 that had been updated
by a previously-released security update (i.e., KB928366;10 Jul-07).

Thanks for that PA Bear, the update problem has now been resolved although
not without a few more twists and turns.
After deleting the original items on my program list I used the clean up
tool and then tried re-installing .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, to be told that the
patch could not be installed because the program to be upgraded was missing
or the upgrade patch was a different version of the program. I then tried
installing .NET Framework 1.1, reasoning that this was the missing program
which would be upgraded by SP1. It worked and then I was able to install
SP1 followed by the cause of all the problems, KB953297.
My update history now shows no outstanding updates and I hope that is the
end of this saga.
My thanks to you for your advice and patience in dealing with a novice.

Yes, .NET Framework SPs require the non-SP version to be in place.
