I have read most of the posts regarding these error messages and still
can't get this problem solved. I have 2 Dell Latitude c500 laptops (W2K) that are having almost the identical update problems. I get 0x800706BE error codes for updates: KB917734, 904706, and 923689. I get 0x800706BA for KB927978, 925454, 920683, 921398, 911564,925398. All of the services needed are running, I have admin priv, but these updates fail. Do you need to see the windowsupdatelog from one of the laptops? I really need to get this solved so I can update this laptop image and send the laptops back out. any suggestions? |

I tried some things this morning in hopes of solving the problem:
re-registered wuau services, deleted all entries in SoftwareDistribution\download folder, logged in as admin and updates still stall. It was stopped on the DirectX KB904706 for 50 minutes. After working for 2days on this problem, I finally looked at what
services were running not what was NOT running. Seems the dell synaptic touchpad (enhanced exe) was hogging all CPU time.
