Error codes with Update

I'm recieving one of two error codes whenever I try to update with Windows
Update.

0x80096010
0x8009200D

I've researched both of these and have found nothing that gets my update to
work. So, here's as much info as I can give. WinXP Pro x64. It almost
seems random as to which error I'll get each time I run Update. usually,
whenever I get 0x8009200D, it happens almost immediatly. I'll click the
link, it checks to see if I have the updated version of Update (which I
don't), and then gives me the error. For 0x80096010, it will search for the
updated version, find that I don't have it, and prompt me to download it.
I'll click the download link, it'll go to 8%, flash 100% then give me the
error.

As I said before, I tried whatever I could find on those two errors (on the
newsgroup thingy), and nothing worked. Any new ideas?

1. 0x8009200D - Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is
not formatted correctly

Give this a try and see if it solves the problem.........

Go to Start>Run and key in each of these commands, one at a time, clicking
on OK or hitting ENTER after each command and then clicking on OK in the
RegSvr32 dialogue box:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll

Restart and see if you can now successfully use Windows Update site.

2. 0x80096010 - The digital signature of the object did not verify

(I see you've already seen
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...b9f15ef2?hl=en.)

Longshot: Are you running any Norton or McAfee applications? Try disabling
them temporarily.

Ok, well, I've tried those before, and again, neither worked. However, your
suggestion about the anti-virus gave me the idea to shut down my firewall
(which I really don't like doing, that's why I haven't tried it yet), and now
Update works. Thanks for your help, though.
