Should we then presume that you're running WinXP SP2?

Is Automatic Updates enabled?

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when
you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0,
you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error
code "1603"

For 0x80072EE7

This error code is generally caused by the following factors:

1. Third party security software conflict.
2. Corrupted Windows Update temporary folder.
3. Incorrect network or firewall settings.

In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, let's refer
to the following steps:

Step 1: Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically
================================================== ===
1. Click "Start", click "Run", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotations) and
press "Enter".
2. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties".
3. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties".
4. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address
automatically".
5. Click "OK".

Step 2: Check the background programs
==============================
Please check if you have installed any of the following firewall programs:

Sygate Personal Firewall
Norton Internet Security
Freedom Firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall

If so, please locate the option for "Generic Host for Win32" and disable it.
If this option cannot be found, I suggest disabling or uninstalling the
firewall to test the issue. Please understand that we are disabling these
programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable them
after troubleshooting.

To protect the system when the firewall programs are disabled, we can enable
the Windows Firewall:

a. Click "Start", click "Run", type "WSCUI.CPL" (without quotations) then
click "OK". This will generate the Windows Security Center application.
b. In the "Windows Security Center" window, click "Windows Firewall".
c. Select the option "On (recommended)" to turn on Windows Firewall.

If you have any other background programs such as Covenant Eyes, Browser
Blaster, or any pop-up blocker, we can also temporarily remove them to test
the issue.

If this issue appears to be related to a firewall program, I also recommend
contacting the firewall manufacturer to obtain information on configuring the
firewall options to allow access to the Windows Update site.

If the issue persists after disabling the background programs, let's refer
to the following steps to rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.

Step 2: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update
===========================================
Please be assured the folder will be recreated when we visit the Windows
Update site.

1. Click "Start", click "Run", and type "cmd" (without quotations) and press
"Enter". Please run the following command in the open window to stop the
Automatic Updates service.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it indicates that it was
successfully stopped before renaming the folder. However, if it failed,
please let me know before performing any further steps and include the error
messages you may have received.

2. Click "Start", click "Run", and type in "%windir%" (without quotations)
and press "Enter".
3. In the open folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
4. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type "SDold" (without
quotations) as the file name.
5. Click "Start", click "Run", and type "cmd" (without quotations) and press
"Enter".

Type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) in the opened
window to restart the Automatic Updates service.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it indicates that it was
successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before
performing any further steps and include the error messages you may have
received.

After completing the above steps, please check the issue again. If it still
does not work, please proceed to step 3. In Clean Boot mode, most third party
software cannot be loaded.

Step 3: Perform a clean boot and disable third party services and startup
items
================================================== =========
1. Click "Start" and then "Run", and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without quotations) and then click "OK".
2. On the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All".
3. On the "Services" tab, check the box before "Hide All Microsoft Services"
and then click "Disable All".
4. Click "OK". Choose "Yes" to restart the computer.
5. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility
when Windows starts" if you receive the message after restarting the system.

Then try to update Windows, and check if you still receive the error code.

NOTE: We can select Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to Normal
Mode after we get it resolved.
If the issue persists after performing the above steps, please help me
collect additional information for further troubleshooting:

How to collect System Information:
===========================
1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type in "MSINFO32" (without quotation marks)
and press Enter to start System Information.
2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Export";
save it as a Text file, such as "system.txt" to your local Desktop.
3. Please send it as an attachment to v-.

How to collect the Windows Update log file:
================================
Note: There are two Windows Update log files with similar names, we will be
using the "WindowsUpdate.log" file without a space in the middle of the name.

1. Click on "Start", "Run" and type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without quotations).
2. Click "OK". We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log".
3. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As" and select
"Desktop" in the "Save in" option on the top of the window.
4. Click "Save". The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please send the
file as an attachment to v-.

However, if the file is unable to be collected by the above steps, we can
also use the following method to collect it.

1. Click "Start", "Run", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and then
press "Enter".
2. In the open window, we will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log".
3. Please send it as an attachment to: v-.

Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the
email application being used. Most applications will provide you with either
an "Attach" button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file.
After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to
attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and
then clicking on the "Attach" button.

Please let me know the results at your earliest convenience. I appreciate
your time and effort on this issue. If anything is unclear, please do not
hesitate to let me know, and I will be glad to help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Calven
