Error creating favorites in IE7

When clicking on "Add to Favorites" in IE7 on my Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit
machine I get an error window saying "Unable to create <shortcut>.
Unspecified error". If I try to drag the shortcut from the address bar into
the Favorites side bar it says "Access denied".

I have checked and I am the owner of the Favorites folder so why can't I add
favorites anymore?

You can always 'reset' IE to defaults (options, advanced tab), though that
is a bit draconian for a first try. I would move the favs folder (options
again), and restart to move it back.

I certainly don't want to reset all settings and I am not sure I follow your
other suggestion. The Favorites folder currently sits on my D: drive. Are
you saying I should move it somewhere else?

Before you do anything, export your favorites. That way you can import them
back if there is a problem

Well I have tried moving the Favorites folder to a few different locations
including on a different disk but the problem remains: "Unable to create
<shortcut>. Unspecified error". Apart from this, IE7 and Vista in general
are working properly.

Any other ideas?

If I try to copy it gives me "Access denied" yet I am the owner of the
Favorites folder and can create files in it by directly accessing the folder
outside of IE.

You mentioned in an earlier post that you moved your favorites folder to
your D:. I had a similar problem with "unspecified error" when adding a
new entry to favourites. The problem went away when I restored the
favorites folder back to it's default location.

I also wanted my Favorites on my D:, so I moved it there (using the
normal technique of right-click, properties, location, move), but then
in the new destination, I edited the security settings and gave myself
"Full Control". That solved the problem:

- Close all instances of Internet Explorer
- Right-click the folder, then select properties
- Click on the Security tab
- Click Edit
- Click Add
- Click Advanced
- Click Find Now
- Find you user name, select it, and click OK
- Click OK
- Add a check mark to the "Full Control" entry
- Click OK
- Click OKOpen Internet Explorer, and try to add a site to Favorites. The error
should have gone away now.

You are a legend Dzomlija! That has fixed it - thanks.

But why is that necessary??? Looks pretty hopeless to me.

There's a much easier way:
Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.
Browse to the folder that contains your Favorites folder. That means
whichever folder your Favorites folder is in.
Copy this statement, right click the Command Prompt window at the prompt,
and select paste:
icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low
