Error: Desktop Window Manager has stopped working

After installing Vista, I have an AppCrash in Dwm.exe every time I start the
computer. Vista runs, but the translucency is not working.

Screenshot:
http://allenbrowne.com/temp/CrashDwm.png

The faulting module is nvd3dum.dll, from nVidia. Updating the display driver
did not solve the problem. I updated it using the Optional download in
Windows Update, so its properties are as shown here:
http://allenbrowne.com/temp/nvd3dumProps.png

Any suggestions for solving this? The graphics card is a GeForce 7600 GS
(256MB RAM, PCIE), with dual monitors (secondary one rotated to Portrait
mode.)

Allen,

What motherboard are you using?

What driver are you using for the video card?

Motherboard is an Intel 965LT, with Core2 Duo (6600) processor.

Graphics card is nVidia GeForce 7600 FS (manufactured by xfxforce), PCIE
with 256MB RAM. Driver is 7.15.10.9746, and the Digital Signer is "microsoft
windows hardware compatibility publisher." More details in the 2nd
screenshot.

The Aero features do work if tell Vista not to use monitor 2 and reboot, so
it appears to be related to the second (rotated) monitor. It's the 32-bit
Vista.

Any help appreciated.

Have you checked your event viewer to get more specific information? From
what you have said, seems likely that the driver is most likely at fault.
Have you checked for updated drivers on the manufacturers site. With video
cards, it is usually best to check the mfg, then the chipset mfg if not
available from the video card.

A few of the bigger video card mfg do add tweaks to the drivers for their
cards. Most, it is the nVidia driver. Hopefully someone else has dealt
with the problem and has a solution

Thanks, John.

The Event Viewer contains the same details as shown in the screenshot. It's
Event ID 1000 each time.

The nVidia site has no newer drivers, and the manufacturer's site will give
me no information at all unless I pull the computer apart (including the air
channel covering the CPU and video card) and get the serial number, which
seems pointless. (They are going to blame nVidia anyway, since they don't
make the drivers.)

The nVidia site has a "go away if you didn't buy from us" message, a
Customer Feedback option that "doesn't work yet", and a "partner support"
page that 404s.

So, at this stage, it looks like my choices are to live without Aero or
without monitor 2.

I have the identical same issue. Same driver version but an nVidia Quadro NVS 120M. I don't think I had the problem from day one though. This is a new laptop with a clean Vista install. I think the problem started sometime after I installed several applications. If you find a solution please post back. Likewise if I find one I'll post it here.

Thanks

I also had issues with Aero on Vista and mulitple monitors. I downloaded
and installed the latest drivers from Nvidia and now everything works.
The driver on the xfx website was an older version. This software works
with all 6, 7, 8 series GeForce cards:

I solved it on my particular setup. It was caused by the second screen being rotated 90 degrees. When I put the second screen back into a lanscape configuration Aero Glass works on both.
