I get the same error. I am running Windows Ultimate, and the update is the
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

I followed this advice on another message on this board and it worked. You
may want to try it:

Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install and install manually
the archive. After finish run again the windows update to search for updates
and install automatic if any new.
Finish. You are updated now.
