The SQL Server 2005 Database Service can not be started. Try starting the
service manually from Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and then Services.
It should be called "SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)". If there is an error, what is
the error?

Thanks,
Peter Saddow

I get the following error: Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)
on Local Computer. For more information review the System Event Log. If
this is a non-Microsoft service contact the vendor, and refer to
service-specific error code 17113.

Then I 'finally' found the Event Log and the message is: Error 2(The system
cannot find the file specified.) occurred while opening file 'c:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain
configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have
caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if
necessary.

I tried to look at my startup options, in Defender, but Vista is a bit
unfamiliar right now so I don't know where else to look. I didn't see
anything that looked like SQL in Defender startup options.

Thanks again for the help!

Hi Folks

I have a very similar problem to UR21derful (good name that) and have tried
the Manual startup for "Office Source Engine" and for "SQL Server
(MSSMLBIZ)". The former starts OK and the later starts and then stops, with
the warning that some services stop automatically if they are not in use by
other services or programs. I left them both on automatic but still KB921896
fails to install.

I have Office 2003 and 2007 trial on board with VISTA Home Premium.

Any help would be gratefully received and diligently applied.

Dennis (Devon UK)

Download the update and install it manually. You WILL need the original
install CD.

I went to the section described by Peter below. I couldn't get it to start
manually at first either. Then I right clicked on"SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)" and
chose properties. Next I chose the "Log On" tab. I noticed that there is a
user name and password already entered into a field. So out of curiosity I
checked "Local System Account" instead. I then tried the windows Update
again. IT FINALLY WORKED! I hope this saves someone else hours of headaches.

I tried that and am getting error code 17113, its on manual start up.
But I also have SQL Server (SQLexpress) that is started and on automatic
start up. If I have the 2nd one do I need the 1st one with the error?
