Error loading windows

Hi, I've got a problem loading windows:
on boot the graphical interface doesn't load leaving me just a black screen,
access to task manager works but nothing more. I already tried booting in
safe mode etc etc but nothing change, runnign tasks are:

csrss.exe
winlogon.exe
dwm.exe
PresentationSettings.exe
taskeng.exe
taskmgr.exe

I think where's some problem in winlogon.exe but i don't know how to restore
it without a new installation process.

p.s. sorry for my english...

i've found the problem... explorer.exe doesn't autoload...

Your English is just fine. The PresentationSettings.exe makes me think that
your computer is expecting to be hooked up to a projector and that's why
nothing is showing up on your monitor/laptop screen. If you have a laptop,
refer to its manual for the FN+[some key] that toggles Presentation Mode.
If you don't have a laptop, then use the System Configuration Utility to
stop PresentationSettings.exe from starting with Windows.

Start Orb>Start Search box>msconfig [enter]

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab.
You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get
a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be
blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then
tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

As for the winlogon, here is the information about that but I really think
you should explore the PresentationSettings.exe thing first.

From MVP Rick Rogers - The shell entry may be damaged in the registry. From
Task Manager, click 'new task' on the applications tab. Type regedit and
click ok. Agree to the UAC prompt, then expand the branches to reach this
one:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on the Winlogon key, then on the right find the "shell" string. Double
click it, change the value data to read "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)
and click ok. Then close the registry editor and restart the system.

And what about PresentationSettings.exe? What have you found out about that?

If the PresentationSettings.exe didn't pan out, did you try the winlogon fix
I gave you?

worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Don't Panic!

Has anyone found what might be causing this annoying exe to load
automatically. I am also experiencing the same problem but I have nothing in
my startup entries that relate to this file. I have downloaded autoruns and
there doesn't appear to be any entries relating to this file either. I am not
running a project nor have I ever had one connected to my computer.

Everything was working fine untill a couple of days ago then all of a sudden
this program just started loading at logon and preventing explorer from
starting. I have only installed one program over the last few days(Mobile
Master phone sync software) but it has nothing to do with this kind of
feature. I have since uninstalled it anyway but that's had no effect.

Any help will be kindly appreciated.

What same problem? If you have the exact same problem as the Original
Poster, then follow the instructions that were given him/her. Of course,
you need to have the exact same hardware and software installed or your
situation isn't "the exact same".

It would be better for you to make a new post including all pertinent
information about *your* system instead of inserting your problem into
someone else's old, closed thread. This will help:

Apparentley, no one has found a fix. Here is the way I resolved th
problem. BTW, I have a new laptop running Vista Ultimate 64 bit

Go to c:\windows\system3
look for PresentationSettings.ex
Rename this file to PresentationSettings.old (or anything you want a
long as you remember the new name in case you want to revert thi
operation). To rename the file, you may need security permission whic
requires that you take ownership of the file

Reboot and you will NOT get "Presentation" loaded. The only proble
with this fix is that Presentation under Windows Mobility Center wil
not work because PresentationSettings.exe file has NOT executed

If anyone finds a REAL solution to this problems, please let us know
Hopefully, Microsoft will come up with something soon
