Hi

the error message 80070424 keeps ocurring though I tried the solutions given
in the knowledge base (those I was able to find) and given here; after having
reinstalled wuapi.dll, it takes the PC about 20 seconds to re-disable the
automatic update service again, which can't be enabled.

My system informations read as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

I'd really appreciate any attempt to solve my problem!

I don't know what you've tried but -

You cannot turn on the Automatic Updates feature on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based
computer
http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/916261
The Automatic Updates feature is turned off in the Security Center. Additionally, you
cannot turn on the Automatic Updates feature.
When you try to install updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you may
receive an error message that resembles the following:
0x80070424

Thanks for your reply

I'm sorry I didn't really describe my problem, what you wrote sums it up;
neither can I download from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, nor can I
turn on the automatic update in my security center.

I tried to find solutions in the web in general by using Google (tm) using
the keywords "error message 80070424" but I couldn't find something that
solved the problem.

I found several solutions given in this community, but none of them worked
satisfactory.
Torgeir Bakken gave a solution to the question titled "Yikes! Error message
80070424" which I tried. Afterwards I was able to enable the automatic update
in the security center, but it was automatically disabled after about 20
seconds, so this solution was only quite temporary.

The solution you yourself gave in a reply to the question titled "Error
80070424 updating windows xp" didn't work either (this one didn't solve the
problem even temporarily), nor did the solution given here:
http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/916261

I really appreciate your trying to solve my problem, sorry for being imprecise
