Try looking at other users' responses

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...xp=&sloc=en-us
or
http://tinyurl.com/857j5

for example:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;896226
You cannot download updates when you access the Windows Update Web site from
a Windows XP-based computer that is behind a firewall or a proxy server
[Error number: 0x80244017]
[Error number: 0x80244018]
[Error number: 0x80244019]
[Error number: 0x8024401B]
[Error number: 0x80244021]

IE it
showed I wasn't using one.
Running "proxycfg -d" fixed it all up.”

TaurArian,

I bet you tried to give a link with Answered Questions pre-chosen?

Anyway I just noticed that nothing changes in the Address bar when
you use that control. How useful is that? It's probably one of those
empty terms that would do it but what the heck would the value be
even if we knew which one to modify?

Hmm... perhaps tracing it will show what's what...
Arg... I could have guessed. It's a client side filter!
Nothing goes out; therefore no clues about which terms
could be changed or what values they could have.

To get any further on this I will have to run a script debugger.
E.g. it's too hard to tell just looking at View Source if there
would be any mechanism for pre-selecting that filter.
Unfortunately this is a new partition and I haven't got one
installed yet.

Hmm... I got a bit further just using Notepad and findstr ;}
Somehow we need to call ShowFilter(1) but it's a "method"
so there's an Object involved...

I have a feeling this is going to be a lost cause. Pity.

FYI

Hi Robert, if you ever figure it out, let me know, sometimes it all just gets too
hard.
Hope you are having a good weekend.

Hi,

I have found a fix to all these update errors concerning v6 of Windows update.

1. From the WU page (where the error is displayed) select Use
Administrators Options.
2. Then select Windows Update Catalog. A new page will open, but this page
uses v4 of WU.
3. Then select Windows Update. Off it goes an finds all the updates.

Hope this helps.

Stuart

I have also used the proxycfg -d command to get my Windows Update working
properly.

Previously I was getting the following error [Error number: 0x80244019].

I also had previously cleared the IE cache and history as well as set all
the IE zones to default values.

Thanks for the tip!

Yes!! This worked!!
that other "proxycfg -d" stuff didn't work for me... even though everyone
was praising it. This solution worked fine...
BTW, i think the microsoft site has to be one of the most disorganised
websites i've ever seen.

I cannot find any Windows Defender updates using this method. When I search
the catalog for "Defender" nothing shows up.

Lloyd,

Windows Defender is now out of Beta. Suggest you uninstall the BETA
version from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool from the link on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Run it and remove the files and registry settings for the BETA version
of WD, if present.

Then download the newly released version:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Save it, close the browser, and then install it.
