Error message (Administrator) when searching for updates

After trying to search for available updates, I get an error message telling
me that I must be logged on as an administrator or a member of an
Administrator's group in order to install items from Windows Update. I am
logged on as the administrator of my computer and my computer is not
connected to a network. I'm using XP home.

Another cause for Administrator only message can occur if a program on your computer
is intercepting the Windows Update process.

I've been having EXACTLY this problem, but I'm running Windows ME. Needless
to say, commands like "Run as" are not available to me.

Any other ideas?

Win ME has no 'Admin' accounts - and the probability is that you are
infected with malware.....

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
