have anyone experienced an error after installing Windows SP3 when you try to
log on it comes up with an error code 0x80040509 "the license key is not
valid on this media, please reinstall windows"

If so how did you fix it, and keep Windows SP3 installed

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

I have researched on this on a Live scenario.

If you get this 0x80040509 after first reboot of SP3 then you have run the
Product Key Update tool and update the system with a retail product key.

In all the scenrios if you run the MGADiag.exe you will see that the copy of
Windows is Genuine but the PID type is 1-Volume.
This is the reason. As a home user you need to be running with a retail PID.

Either you can do a slipstream of SP3 with a XP SP2 CD and then use your
retail product key or first run the key update tool, change the key and once
you have a retail PID then install SP3.
