I have researched on this on a Live scenario.
If you get this 0x80040509 after first reboot of SP3 then you have run the
Product Key Update tool and update the system with a retail product key.
In all the scenrios if you run the MGADiag.exe you will see that the copy of
Windows is Genuine but the PID type is 1-Volume.
This is the reason. As a home user you need to be running with a retail PID.
Either you can do a slipstream of SP3 with a XP SP2 CD and then use your
retail product key or first run the key update tool, change the key and once
you have a retail PID then install SP3.
