Error message at bootup: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
encountered a problem and needed to close

Setup a new PC, immediately installed all Microsoft Critical updates
than eTrust corporate anti-virus & updated that.

No signs of a problem the first day. Shut down many times etc.
Turn the machine on the next day, and saw the following error at
startup after the desktop loaded.

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and
needed to close.

This error occurred on 3/28/2005 at 4:28:41 PM.

Details mentioned szappname: svchost.exe"

I shut down a few times today, ran FireFox 1.0.2 again, and didn't see
it. This seemed to pop up today after I had run FireFox, shut the
machine down, and turned the machine back on. Then the message came
up after loading the desktop. I had no errors or problems the first
time turning using it or while shutting down.

Running Symantec's online Security Check mentioned port 1723 was open.
Description is PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol). This service
is used for virtual private networking connections.

This pc has been run for 3 days without seeing this problem again. I
installed a new hard drive in another pc, and had the exact same
problem!

Help.

Hi Nate,

I've been getting exactly the same error as you for a while now. It's
intermittent, and while researching the issue (on google!) I can across a
website while said that the Feb 2005 windows updates were to blame, and that
Microsoft know about the problem and are working on it. Click on 'send' when
you get the fault, and you should be given the opportunity to provide them
with more info. I uninstalled the Feb 2005 updates (9 of them) about a week
ago and haven't had the problem since. Click on 'add/remove programs' on
your control panel, click on 'show updates' at the top of the window, and
scroll down to 'windows updates' where you can uninstall them. Take a 'system
restore' point prior to doing this incase you want to undo your actions.
You'll be asked to restart after some of the installations.

Keep your virus defns up-to-date and rule out any virus activity first.
Then wait for Microsoft to fix the problem, or buy a mac instead

Hope this helps.

Some have suggested getting rid of the file dumprep from Msconfig.

Haven't seen the problem in a few days.

"Nate Goulet",

Is it at all possible, Nate, that you are blocking Win32 Generic Service?
If so, this would block Windows Update.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Worked on someone else's pc today, and it too came up the the error at
bootup. It's also a Dell, and this time it does not have the
Dumpprep file in Msconfig. I also did not hook it up to the company's
network or Internet connection, or install any software.

Assume it was a recent Windows update.

So much for that idea of dumpprep being the cause. Any ideas?

Does that mean that it was running the System File Checker that fixed
the problem rather than disabling Dumpprep?

I haven't seen the glitch again on the other 3 machines.

This machine I worked on today uses Dial-Up internet access. Is there
a way to check the Windows update History without going on the
Internet?

I too have experienced the same problem that Nate wrote about, but today I
got another message. AOL notified me that a new DeskBar was available, when
I tried to download it I got a message stating (C:\documents and
settings\user\localsettings\temporary internet) also
(files\content.IE5\5DO20ZTB\AOL Deskbar[1].exe is not a valid Win32
application). Please offer any suggestions if you have experienced this
situation.

I would like to rapport here that I have also encountered a generic host
error on my system. Also the message I read leads me to believe that ms needs
to know the content of the rapport inorder to improve Generic host services
for win 32 services. Since I get untrustworthy updates from microsoft I am
very apprehensive towards sharing my ip address with ms. Will my os (xp)
malfunction in the future if I do not participate with ms developers, or will
an optimal performance be effected in any way?
