Error message in IE8

As I click Favorites within IE8, then the little arrow to the right of "Add
to Favorites" and finally "Arrange Favorites" (or something simililar, I have
a Swedish version), I get a blank page with buttons in the lower part of the
page. Irrespective of which button I click, I get the following error message:

Object doesn't support this property or method

I have reinstalled (without uninstalling) IE8, which didn´t help
I have reset IE settings with no effect
I have disabled soft scrolling with no effect
I have set security levels to standard with no effect

I have XP Pro sp3 (Swedish) with all the recent updates from Windows Update.

Any idea how to fix this?

You reinstalled IE8 or you did a Repair Install of WinXP?

Thank you.

Which was installed first, SP3 or IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Were any of the above applications running in the background when you
originally installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

SP3 was installed first.

I have ZoneAlarm Security Suit v 7 (includes firewall, antivirus and
antispyware) installed and current and it was running during install of IE8.
I run a full investigation of the system weekly as well as a full
investigation by Kaspersky Online Virus/Malware scan weekly.

I occasionally use Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes Antispyware quick scan

As of last Saturday nothing found

I have earlier run Norton Security Scan but seized to do so. (I did a
thorough uninstall of this software now, did not effect the issue). Otherwise
no Norton or McAfee antimalware ever installed, Norton Systemworks basic
edition 2006 is installed though.

I have no restore point that predates the install of IE8.

Big mistake IMHO. Try the following:

1. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

2. Disable (a) ZA antivirus, antispyware & firewall and (b) Ad-Aware's
Ad-Watch & Guard then (c) enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been re-enabled!

3. Uninstall IE8 and reboot two times.

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

NB: Uninstalling IE8 automatically restores your previous IE version!

4. Confirm that everything you disabled in #2 is enabled again and the
Windows Firewall is disabled.

5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan |
Install any Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB972260). If a Root
Certificates update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it
to take full advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB: Do NOT reinstall IE8! "Hide" it for now, please.

6. Test the functionality of Add to Favorites and Arrange Favorites: Does
the behavior persist?

I have followed your instructions thoroughly with no problem.
Unfortunately, the problem persists...

So the behavior persists in your restored IE version. Is it IE7 or IE6? If
it's IE7, which was installed first, IE7 or SP3?

Was NAV included with NSW 2006 and was it (NAV) ever installed, even
briefly? Do you still use NSW at all?

I have IE 7.0.570.13 and I remember that I installed SP3 in May-June last
year, when it came, so if IE7 was around by then, which I think it was, (I
certainly installed IE7 as fast as it was available), then IE7 was installed
before SP3.

NAV was NOT included in NSW 2006 Basic and has never been installed even
briefly, but NSS (Norton Security Scan) has.

Yes, I use NSW, especially Norton Windoctor, rather often.

Were all components of ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite (ZAISS) running in
the background when you installed SP3 last year?

Truth be told, I suspect your continued & injudicious use of WinDoctor has
caused most, if not all, of your problems. If you think your Registry needs
to be "cleaned" or "repaired," read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099
and draw your own conclusions.
