Error message with NEW install of IE7!

Just tried to speak to Technical, but they cut me off after I jumped through
ALL the hoops!
Anyway, situation is this, I tried to bring a previous install to this PC
via a slave drive from my old PC. Realised this would not work (Didn't have
the correct authority?) so downloaded IE7 to make sure all was up to date
(RE-Installing IE7 supposedly rids system of old setup?) And am now getting
the SAME error message. IE "Windows cannot access the specified device, path
or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
Anyone able to offer any help please??

Full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3)?

Were you running IE6 prior to the new install of IE7?

Sorry in my haste you understand!

XP with SP3 yes. And running FF and never used IE at all and PC was new and
unused prior. I THINK IE6 was installed, but not sure to be truthful. However
tried to use IE7 from MY old HD as a slave. I myself think that this has
somehow corrupt the registry? But as I am a complete novice with IE (And most
others!)May sound a little contrived!

Which was installed first, IE7 or WinXP SP3?

(If you're running WinXP, you had IE6 installed at some point.)

Apologies Guys! Only just got back to PC after a hard day1 (Aint they all?)
RIGHT had Francoise on this AM from France and he hit the wall! Going to try
again tomorrow?
BUT to answer the questions! NO I never ran IE6 and this is nOW not on my
system at all? Tried to re-install this again today (FULL install) but system
reported I had a LATER version installed? And so would not install it. I have
removed ALL of IE7 (Except the programme files which have zero in them?)
And so yes I DI Install ie7 on this new system but it would not work and the
message as above. And I installed (OR TRIED TO install IE7 before downloading
SP3.
Hope this is followable! And this time I will also BOOKMARK the thread!! yes
I lost THAT too! (Mr McGoo springs to mind?!)

Regards

Chris

> NO I never ran IE6...

In order to be able to install IE7, you had to be running WinXP SP2 or SP3,
and WinXP has included IE6 by default from the get-go, Chris, so you had to
have been running IE6 at some point.

> Tried to re-install this again today (FULL install) but

If you're running WinXP SP3 and you cannot (un)install IE7, it must have
been installed before you installed WinXP SP3 or you have IE8 Beta 1
installed.

See...

About IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...and-xpsp3.aspx

• If you've never installed IE8 Beta 1, you will have to uninstall WinXP SP3
before you'll be able to uninstall and reinstall IE7.

• If you installed IE7 or IE8 Beta 1 before you installed WinXP SP3, you
will have to uninstall WinXP SP3 before you'll be able to uninstall and
reinstall IE7 or uninstall IE8 Beta 1.

"In order to be able to install IE7, you had to be running WinXP SP2 or SP3,
and WinXP has included IE6 by default from the get-go, Chris, so you had to

I have NEVER knowingly run ANY version of IE! I have used Fire Fox
exclusively now for several years on all my machines. So sorry but I would
not know about IE6. The machine came ready to roll and did have SP2 installed
on it I think?

All I can glean is that IE6 will not install due to a newer version of IE
being installed and I would CERTAINLY not download IE8. No need? I am only
trying IE7 as I have issues with Pay Pal account and not being able to access
certain things.

Anyway, I spent a further 3 and a 1/2 hours with my new "Friend" in MS
Technicla today and despite the chaps best efforts we are now no further
forward! He altered ALL the system permissions and still no good. I have
searched for ANYTHING from a previous install of IE6/7/8 and can find
nothing.

I have now however asked MS to call me back on Monday and he will see if he
can again help. BUT all of this is NOT helped by the fact I do NOT have the
installation disc for windows for this machine. I do have a genuine one for
my old machine but am loath to try and install that or repair as I fear it
will remove this install? But I have uninstalled SP3 and I now hope you will
be able to help me further? but regardless thanks for all the help thus far.

So you were running WinXP SP3 (and using Firefox as your browser) when you
were having these issues. What were/are these Pay Pal issues and what
things cannot be accessed?

What anti-virus application or security suite was installed when you first
encountered these issues? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

What version of Firefox were you running?

Do you use "Registry cleaners"?

The above notwithstanding...

> I have NEVER knowingly run ANY version of IE!

Doesn't matter: All flavors of WinXP include IE6 by default, Chris.

> All I can glean is that IE6 will not install due to a newer version of IE

If you can manage to uninstall IE7, the machine will be running IE6 by
default. In other words, you don't need to reinstall IE6.

Who or what is "MS [Technical]," Chris? Are you referring to an MS Support
Tech (e.g., for WinXP SP3)?

> ...all of this is NOT helped by the fact I do NOT have the
> installation disc for windows for this machine.

Many machines include a hidden Recovery partition which can be used to
reinstall WinXP to OOBE state. Check with the manufacturer. Also: Reboot
and keep tapping the F8 (or F11) key to see if a Recovery option is listed.

Meanwhile, see if you can uninstall IE7:

=> If "Windows Internet Explorer 7" is listed in Add/Remove Programs and
there isn't an Uninstall button available, IE7 was installed before WinXP
SP3 was installed. To be able to uninstall IE7 (see below), you will first
have to uninstall WinXP SP3 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249).

=> If "Windows Internet Explorer 7" is listed in Add/Remove Programs and
there *is* an Uninstall button available:

Uninstall IE7 *exactly* per these instructions then test IE6:
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

[Only use the Command %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot
uninstall WIndows Internet Explorer 7 via Add/Remove Programs; it's safe to
ignore any warnings that such-and-such might not work if you uninstall it;
ignore any references to Vista on the above page.]

=> NB: Do NOT attempt to reinstall IE7 yet! <=
