error message when trying to sync

When I try to select the serial port for the Palm III Hot
Sync, I get an error message that reads "The selected
port, COM1 is not available at this time. Hot Sync manager
will open the port when it becomes available." My palm
cradle is plugged into the serial port (a 9 pin port). Can
you tell me how to make that port available?

This isn't a Palm group, it's for pocket PC's.

As general info:
Are you sure your serial port is COM1? Not COM2? Is it enabled in your
computers BIOS?
Is your mouse a serial port one or a PS2 or USB one? Do you have a serial
port modem- which port is it using? COM1 and COM3 share some resources as do
COM2 and COM4- this can cause in use/locking and other issues.

But try a Palm newsgroup- there may be common causes for your problem which
other Palm users would be aware of where users of a machine that uses a
different operating system aren't.
